Tax overhaul unlikely this next legislative session|
It seems unlikely the legislature will consider a major tax overhaul in the upcoming session. Chairman Galen Hadley of Kearney says the committee heard more complaints about property taxes than any other tax. The committee proposes the legislature consider a number of ways to reduce the property tax burden, as the committee report identifies the problems, but doesn't propose solutions. It does say the legislature needs to consider increasing aid to public schools so school districts can lower levies. It also recommends increase property tax credits, circuit breakers and lowering the assessed valuation of farm land.
