GI City Council votes to upgrade power plant

The Grand Island City Council has voted to spend $42 million in upgrading the city's 30-year-old coal-fired power plant. The project is aimed at complying with federal regulations regarding mercury and other emissions from the plant. Councilman Mitch Nickerson said at the meeting Tuesday night that the $42 million was a lot of money, but the city had to spend it. Officials say the project will reduce the amount of mercury emissions by 90 percent, the hydrogen chloride/sulfur dioxide emissions by 83 percent and remove particulates of heavy metals and other toxins from plant discharges.
