Winter weather coming to central Nebraska

Posted: 02/20/13 08:24

A winter storm warning is in effect from 6:00 pm Wednesday to 6:00 pm CST Thursday. The City of Grand Island has already declared a snow emergency in preparation for the storm. The system will bring heavy snow across the State, up to 10 to 14 inches by the time the system moves out. Snow is expected by this afternoon and will continue through the day Thursday. The heaviest snow will fall between midnight Wednesday night and noon on Thursday. Travel will be difficult and hazardous due to a combination of snow, blowing and drifting snow, low visibilities, and snow covered roads.

Mary Jo Oie with the Nebraska Department of Roads says crews are closely monitoring the storm and are ready to start pre-treating roads once moisture starts to fall. Oie says they will focus on major roadways first. They are ready to tackle the bad weather and reminds citizens to plan for the storm in advance. Oie says their protocol calls for clearing Interstate systems first and then multi-lane state highways. Crews will work around the clock until all roads are clear.
